Movies To Watch When Depressed

We understand how your mind can jump down, and your heart can pour out while watching sad films when already depressed. Mental health crisis indeed makes you want to stay in bed all day, but that doesn’t seem like such a bad idea if you have a cozy blanket, some hot chocolate, and a subscription to any online or offline streaming service.

What Movies Can Do for Your Mental Health

Movies can distract you, and movies can absorb you. Movies are capable of pulling people out of depression but are also responsible for pushing several into it. It’s important to have a good screening process while watching movies when you’re already in a sad place.

The process is different for everyone- different things work for different people.

For those holding their tears back, depressing movies seem like a good option because such movies help us to relate things and let go of the emotions we hold in ourselves. Movies that give people a good cry are always a relief, but for people already drenched in their tears? Not so much.

For people who like to laugh it off- there are all kinds of comedy movies. Such happy watching keeps you laughing and if not laughing throughout the film, then at least smiling. When I say ‘all kinds of comedy’ the genre wasn’t limited to two or four but Action Comedy, Adventure Comedy, Family-Oriented Comedy, Absurd Comedy, Black Comedy, Comedy of Errors, Comedy of Manners, Comedy-Thriller, Courtroom Comedy, Domestic Comedy, Fantasy Comedy, Gross-Out Comedy, Heavenly Comedy, Medical Comedy, Military Comedy, Musical Comedy, Police Comedy, Religious Comedy, Romantic Comedy, Screwball Comedy, Sex Comedy, Showbiz Comedy, Sketch Comedy, Sophisticated Comedy, Sports Comedy, Standup Comedy, Stoner Comedy, Urban Comedy, Workplace Comedy, Crime Comedy, Horror Comedy, Sci-Fi Comedy, Spy Comedy, etc.

People prefer to watch movies about depression and horror movies when in a sad mood too. This may sound odd, but it is comforting to a lot of people dealing with anxiety. Here’s a researched post by HuffPost if you want a better understanding of why.

Our top 5 Feel-Good Movies When You Feel Sad

We understand that T.V. and web series can be very long and since we need to put you in a better mood right now, let’s discuss what we feel are five very-happy movies.

5. War Dogs

If a true story-based dark comedy-crime is not the perfect movie to watch when feeling down, I don’t know what is. The movie is so wholesome and legit funny. With an IMDb rating of 7.1, the movie was nominated for three very prestigious awards: California On Location Awards in 2015 and then the Golden Globes and the Golden Trailer Awards in 2017.

This happy watching could be done on Amazon Prime, Netflix, and other major online streaming services too. Short bits and excerpts of the movie can also be found on YouTube, which is so funny that you have to say, “Oh, damn!” every time you watch.

4. A Dog’s Purpose

Now, this is not exactly one of the happy movies that keep you happy throughout the movie, but the ending is the happiest, and that’s why you should watch it if you’re not having a good day. If you think I’m exaggerating how good the movie is, then please watch the trailers on YouTube. To be very honest, I don’t think you would be able to not see the movie after watching its trailer because then you will know that this is one of those uplifting movies that everybody needs to watch. The movie was rated 7.2 on IMDb and was nominated for the Golden Trailer Award under three different categories in 2017, the very year it was released. It’s available on both Amazon Prime and Netflix.

3. The Hangover (2009)

The Hangover series is famous among the stoners, the alcoholics, and the “Partay Bois” for happy watching because of its misadventures. The first part of the three-movie sequel remains the best to date. Well, the presence of Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms is itself enough to make a movie funny enough to laugh out loud, but these two together in a movie? Man, oh, man! Happy movies do exist. The movie is rated 7.7 on IMDb, which seems like an underrating after seeing the award rack. The movie has won 13 very prestigious awards along with 25 other nominations. You can find all three movies on both Amazon Prime and Netflix. It is one of the anti-depressing movies and is worth watching. You can ask Mike Tyson; he is in the first two movies.

2. Hot Fuzz

Everybody knows that Simon Pegg is in the movie, but many are unaware that Pegg and Edgar Wright, who also happens to be the director of the movie, wrote the movie’s script together. This is one of the happy movies nobody can deny. People can try to debate but can’t say otherwise. The cop-action mystery comedy is rated 7.8 on IMDb and, to its justification, has won two awards and nine nominations. The movie is everywhere. From Amazon Prime to Netflix, from YouTube to Google Play Movies. Everywhere. Speaking about myself, I always watch this movie after watching depressing movies, and once I do that, I do feel better.

1. Beauty And The Beast

Beauty And The Beast are the one musical nobody can hate. We understand that musicals can be irritating for some people, but I don’t know anybody who hates Beauty And The Beast. Rated just 7.1 on IMDb, the movie is one of the uplifting movies that has won 2 Oscars and 15 other awards and nominations in 72 different categories. The masterpiece is available on all major platforms, including Amazon Prime, Netflix, Google Play Movies, and even Disney+ Hotstar. Not everyone has the same memory of getting introduced to Beauty And The Beast, but yet we all love it the same. Some of us got introduced to the title by reading, some by listening to bedtime stories, and some watched it at the theaters: different times, different people but same memories.

So hey, we all have ups and downs in our lives. Sometimes we are okay, and sometimes we are not, and that’s okay. The important thing is believing in yourself, and if watching depressing movies helps you believe in yourself and get better, then let it be. Keep hanging in there.
